Adult Skills Building

Parkside’s Adult Skills Building service gives adults with learning disabilities opportunities to develop practical skills, build confidence and become more independent.

Learning Through Experience

Practical Skills for Everyday Life

Developing everyday skills can help people feel more confident, capable and involved in the world around them.

Our Adult Skills Building activities are designed to give people opportunities to practise useful skills in a supportive environment. The focus is on participation, personal development and encouraging greater independence wherever possible.

Activities can be adapted around individual needs, abilities and goals.

What Can You Develop?

Skills That Support Greater Independence

  • Communication and Social Skills – Build confidence communicating with others, working as part of a group and taking part in shared activities.
  • Confidence and Decision Making – Encourage people to make choices, try new experiences and recognise what they are capable of achieving.
  • Community Skills – Take part in activities beyond Parkside and develop greater confidence accessing local places and opportunities.
  • Work Related Skills – Where appropriate, activities can help develop useful skills such as following instructions, completing tasks, working with others and taking responsibility.

Personal Goals

Progress Looks Different for Everyone

Everyone starts from a different place and has different ambitions.

For one person, progress might mean becoming more confident completing an everyday task. For another, it could mean communicating more independently, taking greater responsibility or feeling ready to try something new.

Our approach focuses on realistic, meaningful development that reflects the needs and goals of the individual.
